Somewhat skeptical, but willing to give it a try based on the articles, I applied honey to a persistent type of skin crack I get in the winter months at a knuckle joint on my thumb. I had tried regular antibiotics with no success. After two days the skin crack disapperared. The honey I used was from a local apiary, so it was not filtered and refined. So I am now a believer.

Medical honey
From the University of Bonn, Germany July 27, 2006, researchers are planning clinical studies to support their experience using honey as a treatment of wounds. Although researchers in Australia think the honey has an enzyeme which creates peroxide, a natural antiseptic, noone is exactly certain how honey works. This is not surprising in that noone knows exactly what is in honey. For instance in 1998, the University of Illinois scientists analyzed 19 samples of honey from 14 different floral sources and from a large difference in the antioxidant power, especially the dark honey, but they are not certain why.
