We read the Sunday, November 07, 2004 Letter to the Editor from Betty Critser of Steubenville thanking those who cleaned up the litter along the road. Betty and Herb have worked hard over the years keeping their section of County Road 43 litter free and looking nice.
We at Seven Creeks Roadside Spring, just down the same road apiece, have tried to do the same with our road. But it is more that just Herb and Betty's or our road, it is all the roads. We think there are many more people like the ones who helped Herb and Betty who would help if given the opportunity. We would like to provide them that opportunity.
To show our support for litter control, for each bag of roadside litter anyone brings to our spring on Saturday, April 30, 2005, from 10am till 4 pm, we will fill, free of charge, their one gallon jug with our spring water and give each person one free game to the miniature golf course located next to the spring. We will call the occasion Litter Fest and will advertise it on our website and on our billboard along Route 22 the entire month of April 2005. At the end of Litter Fest, we will post on our website for the month of May each willing person's name and picture who brings a bag of roadside litter. In the meantime, we will be trying to get some other sponsors to participate.

Roadside Litter Pickup Safety Briefing
Volunteers should always have a safety briefing before picking up litter.
What should crew members wear and bring?
Light colored clothing and safety vest at all times when working near a heavilyt traveled road.
Work gloves and shoes. Sandals are NOT recommended.
A hat and long sleeves or sunscreen lotion to avoid sunburn.
Drinking water.
Where should crew members park their vehicles?
Park all vehicles at least ten feet (if possible) from the traveled portion of the roadway.
Keep the vehicles on the same side of the highway as the volunteers.
Car pool to the site to reduce the number of parked vehicles.
What is the best way to protect workers from traffic?
Whenever possible, face oncoming traffic while you work.
Work during daylight hours only.
Post a reliable lookout person in traffic situations. Equip that person with a whistle. Be
prepared to move out of the way in an emergency. Try to work in areas with little traffic.
Cross traveled sections of roadway while watching for traffic. Do not pick up litter.
Post cardboard signs on roads with traffic concerns at least 100 feet in front of volunteers.
Avoid wearing headset radios or tape players which could interfere with your hearing oncoming
traffic or other potential hazards.
What are the limits of the pickup areas?
Don't pick up items on the traveled roadway.
Don't pick up roadside litter in the median (center) of four lane divided highways.
Stay at least five feet back from the traveled portion of the roadway to pick up roadside litter.
What should crews stay away from?
Don't attempt to remove containers with unknown liquids. Notify ODOT (???-???-
????) or the Highway Patrol ODOT (???-???-????) of the location of such items.
Don't pick up discarded syringes or hypodermic needles.
Avoid places where snakes may be located, around old logs and metal sheets.
Be equally alert for stinging insects.
Avoid contact with poison ivy, poison oak, and nettles. Do not chew on any weeds.
Don't attempt to handle large, heavy objects or pick up dead animals.
Don't attempt to pick up items on bridges or on overpasses. These areas are especially dangerous to pedestrian workers.
Stay well clear of any mowing operations or other maintenance and construction activities.
Don't wander onto private property.
What should we do in case of an emergency?
Every crew should carry a first aid kit. Be prepared for a serious injury. Know the route from the
work area to a hospital or other treatment center.
Every crew should have transportation immediately available.
Have a list of phone numbers of relative or friends to call.
Here are some of the Litter Fest Friends who helped get the word out.
